For vegetarians visiting Tunisia, here are a few dishes that you can request, which do not contain meat:
- Salad mechouia: Peppers, onions, and tomatoes grilled and diced together. The salad is served chilled with a bit of olive oil on top.
- Brick à l'oeuf: The "brick" is a thin pastry-type dough that with its contents are deep-fried. You can order one with simply an egg inside, or with potatoes, parsley, and mushrooms. Tuna can also be added. Best tasted after sprinkling fresh lemon on top.
- Couscous aux legumes: This "vegetable Couscous" is meat-free and feature usually tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and zuccini.
- Ojja nature: The ojja is a tomato-based sauce with harissa (Tunisia's hot sauce) and paprika. There are peppers and tomatoes in the sauce, as well as an egg that cooks right on top of the sauce.
- Lablebi: A puree of shredded bread with chickpeas, harissa, olive oil, a special chickpea sauce, and a egg.
- Fric-hassay: A small donut sandwich with potatoes, egg, harissa, parsley and tuna (ask to make one without tuna).
Other notes:
- If you do not eat tuna, make sure to be very clear with your server, as Tunisians tend to sprinkle canned-tuna on everything.
- Soups like chorba contain meat.
- You may custom-order a spaghetti dish or an omelettte, if necessary.
