Tunis
(transfer time from Tunis Airport - 15 minutes)

Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is a place where old and new live in perfect harmony. Domes and minarets, broad boulevards lined with cafes and flower stalls and elegant shops mix together in this cosmopolitan city. In the old town with its seven mosques, old palaces, artistic and cultural centers you'll find life unchanged and where traders in the souks go about their business as they have done over hundreds of years. You can barter for silver filigree jewelry, hand-woven carpets, perfume, spices and leather goods.
What to see:
- The minaret of Zeitouna, part of the Great Mosque is a must see-- it's open to tourists every morning except Friday.
- Museum of Arts and Traditions is a splendid 18th century palace with a marble court which houses intricate costumes and accessories of upper class life in 19th century Tunis.
- Hammouda Pasha Mosque - a delicately decorated octagonal minaret.
- Bardo Museum located in a 19th century palace on the west side of the city, is home to one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics to be seen anywhere in the world.
- Avenue Habib Bourguiba’s elegant buildings have recently been restored to their former glory and here you will find a shaded boulevard containing flower stalls, modern shops, cafés, shoeshine men and newspaper sellers.
Where to go:
- Take the metro train or taxi to Carthage. Built by Queen Didon and devastated by the Romans, it is the famed capital of the ancient world and is located on the eastern side of Lake Tunis across from the center of modern Tunis. There is also a museum where you can view the ruins and ancient artifacts.
- Sidi Bou Said is a picture-postcard village of sparkling white and blue houses perched on a headland overlooking the Mediterranean. All kinds of souvenirs can be bought along the main street. There are two great cafes: Cafe des Nattes and Cafe Sidi Chabaane with a fantastic view and a wonderful ambiance.
- Golf de Carthage 18-hole golf course, one of the oldest in Africa built in 1927 with fairways surrounded by 100 year old eucalyptus trees.
